FAQs

What is a performance license?

Writers copyright their work (their “intellectual property”) to protect their ownership. This allows them, or their appointed representatives, to decide who may perform the show, the venue for that show, the when and where of that show, and how much will be charged for the use of their work. A performance license to produce the show is granted in consideration of a fee – called a”royalty” or a license fee – and a rental fee.

Are there any hidden charges?

There are no hidden charges for TNT Musicals. Unlike many licensing organizations, TNT Musicals does not charge a separate security deposit to ensure materials are returned. In today’s age of electronic everything, we anticipate sending you files that you will print. We do not send packages of scripts, scores or discs of music tracks.

Are there any other restrictions?

The rights granted for a TNT Musical are limited to “Grand Rights.” These rights cover the right to present the show, in its entirety, on stage. Grand Rights are for entire performances whereas “Small Rights” are for such things as performance of a single song, a medley of songs from the show, videotaping, merchandising (t-shirts or other show-related memorabilia). If you are interested in Small Rights as well as Grand Rights, just let us know and we’ll review and provide any required fee information

How much are licensing and rental fees and how are they determined?

Fees are based on the the category of your production (youth, high school, community, professional) and the size of the venue. The use of orchestration tracks is a separate fee from the licensing of the show. These fees are based on the level of orchestration available.

How do I obtain a performance license?

Chose one of the TNT Musicals and send us an email about your desired use and we’ll get back to you with a quote for the rental fee. Be sure to let us know if you need orchestration tracks. Depending on the license you obtain, and your needs, TNT Musicals will supply electronic files of the script and the piano conductor score. You will need to print the necessary number of scripts and scores for your production of the show.

In addition, if orchestra books or orchestration tracks are needed, these will also be provided as electronic files.

TNT Musicals does not charge a deposit for materials – you will receive the files and produce the copies you need with no need to ship anything back to us. This does not mean that you have an unlimited license to use the materials. You may use them only for the specific performance(s) you have licensed. You may, of course, keep your copies and license the show again at a future date!

I don’t have an orchestra. Can I still license a TNT Musical?

Absolutely. We understand that not every production has access to or can fund the cost of an orchestra so we can license orchestration tracks for each of our shows.

What if I license a TNT Musical and something prevents my performances?

Let us know right away if anything happens to prevent your show from opening as planned. While we can not provide a refund, we may be able to extend your licensing period to allow you to produce/perform your show(s) at a later date.

Can I make changes in a show licensed from TNT Musicals?

During rehearsals, the director or producer may desire to make changes to make the show work in their situation. They may wish to make minor adjustments to a show (such as changing the gender or name of a character or changing a locale to give it local significance). This may be seen as inconsequential to the integrity of the work or that, as directors with a performance license, they have the right to make changes but this is not the case. By law the show you license must be performed “as is.” You do not have the right to make changes unless you have obtained prior written permission from us to do so. Any changes made without express permission violate the authors’ rights under federal copyright law. Contact TNT Musicals if you have a need to change a show licensed from us and we’ll be happy to review with you.

Some TNT Musicals allow flexibility in casting needs as well as song and scene inclusions. These are noted in the script and it is not necessary to review decisions with TNT Musicals.

Can I use the logo of the TNT Musical I license?

Logos are also covered by copyright and trademark law. Logos can legally be used in conjunction with the promotion of a show – on posters, programs and flyers. If you want to create merchandise, such as t-shirts, posters, or other memorabilia. that will be given or sold to the cast/crew or public, please let us know and we’ll be happy to provide you with a licensing quote for that use.

Can I videotape the performance(s) of a TNT Musical licensed from you?

Copyright law gives authors the exclusive right to control the reproduction of their work. The licenses granted by TNT Musicals are for a live stage production of a show – it does not include the rights to record (audio or video). If you wish to record the show for any reason (archival, educational, memento), let us know and we’ll be happy to quote you a licensing fee for that use.
